Club fitting, and how lessons work here
Club fitting
The same GC Falcon data that drives the lessons, pointed at your equipment instead of your swing. Worth doing before you spend money on clubs, and worth doing after you have changed something significant about how you swing.
One club or specialty
A driver or putter on its own, or one specialty set: wedges, irons or hybrids. The session to book when there is a single club you do not trust, or one you are about to replace. Head and shaft are tested together, so you hit the actual combination before you spend anything on it.
Whole bag
New tools across the bag: wedges, irons, woods and driver. Bring the clubs you already play by all means, but this session is about what is worth replacing them with. Head and shaft are chosen together for each one, and the set is gapped so you are not buying two clubs that go the same distance. If the question is whether your current clubs are doing the job, the bag assessment below answers that for less.
Bag Assessment & Combine
For finding out whether the clubs you already own are doing the job. A structured test across the whole bag: yardage gapping, spin, descent angle and the rest, measured rather than guessed. Where the clubs allow it, loft and lie are adjusted between shots, so you leave with the bag improved and a benchmark to measure against later.
The fitting
Shafts
Several hundred of them on the wall, across weights and flexes, in the tip profiles that actually change where the ball goes. This is the rack the Optimizer narrows down, so a recommendation is something you can walk over and hit rather than something you order and hope about.
Irons and wedges
Loose heads, not stock builds. That is the point: you hit the head you are considering on the shaft you are considering, in the lie and length you would actually order, instead of judging a club by whatever came screwed into it.
Drivers and woods
Current heads from the brands we fit, each one adjustable and each one ready to take whichever shaft the session points you at. Head and shaft are two separate decisions, and a driver fitting is mostly about finding the pair.
Putters
Including L.A.B. Golf, whose heads are built so the face stays square through the stroke instead of fighting your hands. Length, lie and toe flow are set on PuttView, where you watch the line the ball actually starts on rather than take anyone's word for it.
The shaft, in a few swings
The shaft is the part most people get wrong and the hardest to guess at. We fit it on the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer 3D, which measures head speed, tempo, toe down, kick angle, release, shaft lean and attack angle from a handful of swings.
It then ranks hundreds of shafts and hands back the three worth hitting, with a bending profile comparing how each one loads from tip to butt. The session is spent comparing real candidates rather than working through the rack.
Brands fitted: Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, LAB Golf, Mizuno, Ping, Puma, Scotty Cameron, Srixon, TaylorMade, Titleist, Tour Edge, US Kids Golf and Vokey. Putters are fitted on PuttView for length and toe flow. Clubs and balls are charged separately.
Worth knowing before you book
You do not need a membership
Lessons, fittings and bay rental are all open to anyone. Membership changes the price, not the access.
There are two locations
Lessons run at Magic City Indoor Golf in Hoover and at Thompson Golf Academy at Whispering Pines (formerly Pine Tree) Country Club in Birmingham.
Payment differs by location
Lessons at Magic City are paid online when you book. At Whispering Pines they are paid in the golf shop on the day.
